As Detroit's new mayor, what do you think Dave Bing should focus on first?

On May 5, 2009 Dave Bing was elected to finish out former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's term. Of the votes cast, Bing captured 52.3 percent of the vote while 47.7 percent went to Cockrel. Dave Bing will be sworn into office sometime next week. As the new mayor, what should be his first order of business?

  1. Detroit's budget (or lack there of), the Detroit Public "Schools," COBO, the crime rate, Detroit's marred image, the abandoned homes, the tattered streets, the horrific transit system, the nonexistent grocery stores, our petulant city council, creating new jobs...pick your poison!

  2. He should tackle something tangible like the Detroit Public School system. I believe Ken Cockrel, Jr. said it best when he likened DPS to the titanic. We all know what happened to the titanic, and it looks like DPS is destined to suffer the same fate. Hopefully, Bing can rewrite history and save/salvage our titanic blunder of a school system.

  3. I think his first course of action would be cleaning up the street. I swear, if i didn't go to wayne state, or go to the fox theater (occasionally) I would never come to Detroit because the city is so unkempt. Detroit is such a joke right now. We need a car czar for the big three, an interim mayor to replace the felon, a new superintendent of DPS to replace THE NEW superintendent of DPS, and lets not even get started on the city council. Forget tackling one issue, Mayor Bing, you've got plenty of issues that need to be addressed YESTERDAY.

  4. Looks like he should focus on not having history repeat itself. The man just got sworn into office earlier this week and already their is controversy surrounding him. It appears that one of his volunteer crisis turnaround team members was 1 of 74 members charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, drug trafficking and other crimes. I've got a blog question for you, Government Affairs: Will Detroit ever have a reputable mayor again?
