Wayne Cares: Detroit Race for the Cure

Many thanks to all 600 plus Wayne Cares participants for participating in the 2009 Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®. Because of each and every one of you, Wayne State University received an award for the highest number of participants amongst other universities.

We would be interested in knowing your reason for participating in the race. Are you a cancer survivor? Do you know someone that has been afflicted with cancer? We want to hear your story. If, however, discussing this sensitive subject proves to be too painful for you, you can always tell us how much you enjoyed the race and/or festivities instead. We would love to hear from all of our Wayne Cares participants. So start blogging!

Wayne Cares: Midtown Detroit's Spring Clean Up

Midtown Detroit's Spring Clean Up took place May 16, 2009 starting at 8:30am. We, the Office of Community Affairs, were a little skeptical about the number of volunteers that were going to show up due to the volatile weather. Thankfully, a little rain was not enough to scare off our dedicated Wayne Cares volunteers. We had a pretty good turnout. Our volunteers came with positive attitudes and the willingness to help keep Detroit clean. On behalf of the Office of Government and Community Affairs, thank you for showing that Wayne Cares.

As Detroit's new mayor, what do you think Dave Bing should focus on first?

On May 5, 2009 Dave Bing was elected to finish out former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's term. Of the votes cast, Bing captured 52.3 percent of the vote while 47.7 percent went to Cockrel. Dave Bing will be sworn into office sometime next week. As the new mayor, what should be his first order of business?

Additionally, on April 29, 2009 Wayne State University hosted two town hall sessions with Detroit mayoral candidates Ken Cockrel, Jr. and Dave Bing. Now we're asking you who has your vote and why. What did you think of Wayne Cares: Volunteer Service Day?

Our goal is to provide a safe and clean environment for all of Detroit's children to play and enjoy this summer. We would like to know what you, the volunteers, thought of this event.
